Best AI writing tools for solopreneurs (2026): ChatGPT, Claude, Copy.ai and Jasper compared
When you run the business alone, you are also the copywriter: newsletters, sales pages, client proposals, social posts and the occasional awkward email. AI writing tools can take the blank page off your hands. The question is which one is worth paying for, and whether you need a dedicated marketing tool at all. Here's how the main options compare on price, free plans and the jobs a solopreneur actually does.

Prices side by side
Prices are in US dollars per month, before tax (UK VAT may be added). Claude, Copy.ai and Jasper prices come from claude.com/pricing, copy.ai/prices and jasper.ai/pricing, checked on 23 October 2026. ChatGPT's pricing page lists plan features but didn't show dollar amounts when we checked, so the Go and Plus prices come from OpenAI's app store listing and independent price trackers, and the Pro prices from OpenAI's help centre. Treat the ChatGPT Go and Plus figures as unverified on OpenAI's own pricing page and check them at checkout.

What each one costs over a year
Our own arithmetic from the prices above, for one person, before tax:
- ChatGPT Go: $96 a year ($8 × 12). The cheapest paid step up, but it doesn't include the advanced reasoning models and may show ads.
- Claude Pro: $200 a year billed yearly, or $240 paying monthly.
- ChatGPT Plus: about $240 a year (monthly billing only).
- Copy.ai Chat: $288 a year billed yearly, or $348 paying monthly, with five seats included.
- Jasper Pro: $708 a year billed yearly, or $828 paying monthly, for one seat.
To put that in context: Jasper Pro for a year costs more than Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus together. If you're building a lean stack, see our $0, $50 and $100 a month stacks for where a writing tool fits in the budget.

Claude: best for long-form writing and editing
Claude is a general AI assistant from Anthropic, and it's a strong fit for the writing a solopreneur does most: newsletter issues, blog drafts, sales pages and careful client emails. The free plan is more generous than it used to be. It includes web search, file creation and code execution, memory across conversations, connectors to your apps, Artifacts and up to five projects.
Pro ($17 a month billed yearly, or $20 monthly) adds more usage (Anthropic says at least five times the free plan per five-hour session), unlimited projects, the Research feature, more Claude models including Opus, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Projects are the useful part for writing: you can keep your brand voice notes, offer details and past newsletters in one place so every draft starts from the same context.
Watch out for: usage limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on paid plans, and there's no fixed message count. Model training is opt-out on the Free, Pro and Max plans, so check your privacy settings before pasting in client material.
ChatGPT: best all-rounder on a budget
ChatGPT is the tool most people already have open. The free plan includes unlimited text chats (subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails), with limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and memory. That covers a lot of everyday writing: rewriting an email, brainstorming subject lines, turning notes into a LinkedIn post.
The paid ladder starts with Go (about $8 a month), which gives you more messages with tools, more uploads and longer memory, but OpenAI says the plan may include ads. Plus (about $20 a month) adds the advanced reasoning models, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and expanded deep research. Pro comes in three monthly tiers at $100, $200 and $500. For writing, Plus is the plan most solopreneurs would compare with Claude Pro.
ChatGPT's edge is breadth. Image creation, voice, data analysis and deep research sit alongside writing, so if you want one assistant for everything, it's the easier single subscription. Go and Plus are billed monthly only; OpenAI offers annual billing on Business and Enterprise.
Copy.ai: best for marketing copy across several models
Copy.ai started as a template-based copywriting tool and now positions itself as a go-to-market AI platform for sales and marketing teams. Its self-serve Chat plan is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly ($288), and includes five seats, unlimited words in chat, unlimited chat projects and access to OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models in one place.
That multi-model access is the main reason a solopreneur might pick it: one bill instead of separate ChatGPT and Claude subscriptions, and five seats if you work with a VA or freelancer. The workflow automation Copy.ai is known for (research, scanning websites, bulk content) sits on the Growth plan at $1,000 a month billed yearly, which is out of range for most one-person businesses.
Watch out for: the pricing page doesn't list a free plan, though the site offers a "Try for free" sign-up, so check what you get before you rely on it. Copy.ai's affiliate programme is reported by third-party directories at 45% for the first 12 months, but its own affiliate page redirected to the homepage when we checked, so we haven't confirmed the terms.
Jasper: best for strict brand voice, at a price
Jasper is an AI marketing platform built around staying on-brand. Pro is $59 a seat a month billed yearly, or $69 monthly, with one seat, a 7-day free trial and no free plan. It includes Jasper's Canvas workspace, agents for core marketing workflows and brand customisation. More seats mean moving to the custom-priced Business plan, and some usage-based features such as the GEO Hub and agents run on credits.
For a solopreneur writing a weekly newsletter and a few posts, Jasper is hard to justify against Claude or ChatGPT at roughly three times the price. It makes more sense if you produce a lot of marketing content for several brands, or if you sell content services and want brand rules enforced across client work.
Also worth knowing: Gemini
If your business runs on Gmail and Google Docs, Google's Gemini has a free plan, and the paid Google AI Pro plan adds Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and other Google apps plus 5 TB of storage. Google's subscriptions page didn't show the AI Pro price in our check; price trackers list it at $19.99 a month in the US, so treat that as unverified.
Which tool for which job
- Weekly newsletter: Claude, with a project holding your past issues and voice notes. Send it with a proper email platform; see Kit vs beehiiv or our best email marketing for solopreneurs.
- Social posts and captions: ChatGPT or Claude for drafts, then a scheduler to batch them. Compare Buffer vs Metricool vs Later; Metricool(opens in new tab) has a free plan.
- Sales and landing pages: draft long copy in Claude, then build the page. See Framer vs Carrd, or use Systeme.io(opens in new tab) if you want the page, email and checkout in one free tool.
- Client proposals and follow-ups: feed your call notes into your assistant. Our Fathom vs Otter vs Fireflies guide covers getting those notes for free.
- Small team or VA: Copy.ai's five-seat Chat plan, or ChatGPT Business if you'd rather stay with one vendor.
A simple AI writing workflow that saves real time
The tool matters less than the process. A setup that works for most solo businesses:
- Write a one-page brief once: who you serve, your offer, prices, tone, words you never use and three examples of your best writing. Save it as a project (Claude or ChatGPT) so every chat starts with it.
- Draft, don't publish: ask for an outline first, then a draft, then edits. Add your own stories, numbers and opinions before anything goes out. That's also what keeps content useful for readers and search engines.
- Repurpose: turn each newsletter into three or four social posts and a short email in one session, then schedule them.
- Automate the hand-offs: tools like Make and Zapier can send a draft from a form or a call summary into your AI assistant and on to a doc. See Make vs Zapier for which is cheaper for one person.
- Check facts yourself: AI tools can state wrong prices, dates and claims confidently. Verify anything a customer will rely on.
Verdict
Most solopreneurs need one good AI assistant, not a stack of writing apps. Start free with Claude and ChatGPT, and pay for the one that writes most like you: Claude Pro if long-form writing is your main job, ChatGPT Plus if you also want images, voice and data analysis in the same place. Choose Copy.ai if one subscription covering several models and five seats suits you, and leave Jasper until brand control across lots of content is worth about $700 a year.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI writing tool for a solopreneur?
For most one-person businesses, a general AI assistant is enough: Claude or ChatGPT. Start on the free plan of either, and upgrade the one you use most. Claude Pro costs $17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly, and ChatGPT Plus costs about $20 a month. Dedicated marketing tools such as Copy.ai and Jasper make more sense once you write a lot of brand copy or work with a small team.
Is there a free AI writing tool that's good enough for business?
Yes. ChatGPT's free plan includes unlimited text chats (subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails) with limits on uploads, images and deep research. Claude's free plan includes web search, file creation, memory and up to five projects. Google's Gemini also has a free plan. For drafting emails, social posts and product descriptions, a free plan is a reasonable place to start.
Is Copy.ai still worth it for solopreneurs?
Copy.ai has moved towards sales and marketing teams. Its self-serve Chat plan is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly ($288), and includes five seats and access to OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models. Its workflow automation sits on plans from $1,000 a month. For one person, it mainly makes sense if you want one subscription covering several AI models or plan to add helpers.
How much does Jasper cost?
Jasper Pro is $59 a seat a month billed yearly, or $69 a month billed monthly, with one seat included and a 7-day free trial. There's no free plan. Business plans are custom-priced.
Will Google penalise AI-written content?
Google's public guidance focuses on whether content is helpful and original rather than how it was produced. Mass-produced pages with little added value are the risk. Use AI to draft and edit, then add your own experience, examples and opinions before you publish. This isn't a guarantee of rankings.
