What beehiiv is
beehiiv is a newsletter platform built for people whose newsletter is the business, not just a side channel. You write and send issues, publish them to a hosted website, grow the list with referral and recommendation tools, and earn from it through paid subscriptions, the beehiiv Ad Network, sponsorships and digital products. It also hosts podcasts and, more recently, a members' community, all under one account.
That focus is what separates it from creator email tools like Kit. Kit is built around selling your own products with automations and sequences. beehiiv is built around growing and monetising the newsletter itself. If you're deciding between the two, our Kit vs beehiiv comparison puts them side by side.
beehiiv pricing (checked 28 October 2026)
Prices below are from beehiiv.com/pricing, in US dollars. Paid plans are priced by list size, and yearly billing is cheaper than monthly. Sales tax such as UK VAT may be added at checkout depending on where you live.
| Plan | Price at up to 1,000 subscribers | Subscriber limit | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Up to 2,500 | Starting a newsletter and testing the platform |
| Lite | $49/mo billed yearly ($588/yr) or $59 monthly | Up to 100,000 | Solo newsletters that want to monetise and automate |
| Pro | $95/mo billed yearly ($1,140/yr) or $109 monthly | Up to 250,000 | Growing publications that want no branding and advanced tools |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Large media businesses |
As your list grows, the price steps up. These are beehiiv's published price points for some common list sizes:
| Subscribers | Lite (yearly, per month) | Lite (monthly) | Pro (yearly, per month) | Pro (monthly) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,000 | $49 | $59 | $95 | $109 |
| Up to 2,500 | $69 | $79 | $129 | $149 |
| Up to 5,000 | $95 | $109 | $169 | $199 |
| Up to 10,000 | $119 | $139 | $199 | $239 |
| Up to 25,000 | $169 | $199 | $299 | $349 |
Lite stops at 100,000 subscribers and Pro at 250,000. Every plan, including Free, has unlimited email sends, so you're never charged for sending more often.
What you pay on revenue
beehiiv says it takes 0% of paid subscription revenue on paid plans. You still pay Stripe's standard processing fee, which beehiiv quotes as 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. For comparison, beehiiv points out that Substack takes 10% of every subscription on top of processing. On a $5 monthly subscription, the Stripe fee works out to about $0.45, so you keep roughly $4.55 before any tax.
The 0% take rate isn't available during a trial, and beehiiv notes that the Ad Network and paid recommendations aren't available in every region, so check your country before you count on that income.
What you get on each plan
Free
The Free plan is genuinely usable. It includes the newsletter editor, a hosted website with an AI website builder, podcast hosting (one show, 5,000 downloads a month), campaign analytics, the Recommendation Network, a link-in-bio page, API access (excluding the Send API) and unlimited sends to up to 2,500 subscribers. You get 1 custom website page, 3 segments and a 30-day analytics lookback.
What's missing matters for a business: no email automations, no paid subscriptions, no Ad Network, no A/B testing, no custom HTML and no referral programme. beehiiv's plan summary lists custom domains on Free, but its feature table shows custom domains from Lite, so check this in the app if you need your own domain from day one. Free also lets you sell one digital product.
Lite
Lite is where beehiiv becomes a business tool. It adds:
- Monetisation: the Ad Network, paid subscriptions (one paid tier), metered paywalls, coupons, programmatic ads and paid recommendations.
- Automations: up to 10 live custom automations with triggers such as sign-up, tag added, segment entered, paid subscription purchased and product purchased, plus true/false branches.
- Growth: a referral programme with up to 3 milestone rewards.
- Products: up to 3 digital products with discount codes, pay-what-you-want pricing, tip jars and licence key delivery.
- Everything else: A/B testing, audience polls and surveys, publishing to segments, custom HTML, 5 website pages, 10 redirects, 12 months of analytics, 3 webhooks, 2 team seats and human support.
Pro
Pro removes beehiiv branding from your newsletter and website and lifts most limits: unlimited automations, segments, website pages, paid tiers and digital products. It adds click-triggered automations, A/B splits in automations, dynamic content, RSS-to-send, audio newsletters, a sponsorship storefront, paid trials, group subscriptions, the Send API, a WordPress integration, webinars and coaching products, up to 10 publications, 10 seats and priority support.
beehiiv AI and the beehiiv Agent
beehiiv's AI features come in three parts. beehiiv AI in the editor is on Lite and above. The beehiiv Agent and the beehiiv MCP server (a way for AI assistants like ChatGPT or Claude to connect to your account) have read access on Free and write access from Lite. beehiiv describes AI usage as "limited" on Free, "elevated" on Lite and five times Lite on Pro, without publishing exact numbers. Treat the AI as a convenience for drafting and managing your publication rather than a reason to pick the platform.
What beehiiv does well for solopreneurs
The free plan is a real starting point. 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, a website and podcast hosting is enough to find out whether your newsletter has legs before you spend anything.
It keeps more of your subscription revenue. A 0% platform fee on paid subscriptions is the headline difference from Substack, and it adds up once you have a few hundred paying readers.
Several income streams in one place. Paid subscriptions, the Ad Network, paid recommendations, sponsorships (Pro's storefront) and digital products all live inside one tool. You don't need to stitch together a separate checkout or ad marketplace to start earning.
Growth tools are built in. The Recommendation Network lets other newsletters recommend yours (and you theirs), and the referral programme on Lite rewards readers for sharing. These are features you'd otherwise pay for with an add-on.
One home for content. Newsletter, website, podcast and community share the same subscriber list, which is simpler than running four tools.
Where beehiiv falls short
Automations are thinner than a creator email tool's. Lite caps you at 10 live automations and keeps click-triggered automations and A/B splits for Pro. If your business runs on long nurture sequences and tagging, Kit or Systeme.io will feel more natural.
The jump to Pro is steep. Removing beehiiv branding needs Pro, which is $95 a month billed yearly at 1,000 subscribers, almost double Lite.
Selling products is limited on lower plans. Lite allows 3 digital products, and order bumps, upsells and custom checkout pages are Pro only. If products are your main income, an all-in-one like Systeme.io or a course platform like Podia is often a better fit (see Teachable vs Podia).
Ad income depends on where you are. The Ad Network and paid recommendations aren't available in every region, so a UK or non-US newsletter should check eligibility first.
Who should use beehiiv
beehiiv is a strong pick if:
- Your newsletter is the product, and you plan to earn from paid subscriptions, ads or sponsors.
- You're starting from zero and want a free plan with room for 2,500 readers.
- You want your newsletter, website and podcast in one place.
- You're moving from Substack and want to stop paying 10% of subscription revenue.
Pick something else if:
- You mainly sell courses, coaching or services and need detailed automations. Look at Kit or Systeme.io, and our best email marketing tools for solopreneurs guide.
- You want an all-in-one funnel, checkout and course builder. See Systeme.io vs Kit.
How beehiiv fits into a solo stack
A typical setup is beehiiv for the newsletter and website, a social scheduler such as Metricool to promote each issue (see Buffer vs Metricool vs Later), and Make to connect sign-ups to the rest of your tools. Questions to ask before you choose beehiiv
- How big will your list be in 12 months? The free plan stops at 2,500, and prices step up at 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000.
- Will you charge for the newsletter? If so, compare beehiiv's 0% fee with what you pay now.
- Are the Ad Network and paid recommendations available in your country?
- Do you need more than 10 automations, or click-triggered ones? That means Pro.
- Does beehiiv branding on your emails bother you? Removing it means Pro.
Frequently asked questions
Is beehiiv free?
Yes. beehiiv's Free plan has no time limit and needs no credit card. It covers up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, a website, podcast hosting and the Recommendation Network, but no automations, paid subscriptions or Ad Network.
How much does beehiiv cost?
At up to 1,000 subscribers, Lite is $49 a month billed yearly ($588 a year) or $59 monthly, and Pro is $95 a month billed yearly ($1,140 a year) or $109 monthly. Prices rise with list size. Checked on beehiiv.com/pricing on 28 October 2026.
Does beehiiv take a cut of paid subscriptions?
beehiiv says it takes 0% of paid subscription revenue on paid plans. You pay Stripe's processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. The 0% rate doesn't apply during a trial.
Is beehiiv better than Substack?
For a solopreneur who wants to keep more revenue, beehiiv's 0% take rate beats Substack's 10%, and it adds automations, an ad network and a full website. Substack is free to start with no monthly fee, so it can be cheaper while your paid revenue is small.
Kit or beehiiv?
Kit is better if you sell products and rely on automations and sequences. beehiiv is better if the newsletter itself is your business and you want ad and subscription revenue. See our Kit vs beehiiv comparison.
Can I make money with beehiiv's Ad Network?
On Lite and above, yes, if it's available in your region. beehiiv says the Ad Network and paid recommendations aren't in every region and aren't available during a trial.
Verdict
beehiiv is the best fit on our list for a solopreneur whose newsletter is the business. The free plan is generous enough to start properly, and Lite at $49 a month billed yearly unlocks paid subscriptions with no platform fee, the Ad Network, a referral programme and basic automations. Start on Free, upgrade to Lite when you're ready to earn, and only consider Pro once branding or automation limits actually get in your way. If you mostly sell your own products, start with Kit instead.
