What Buffer is
Buffer is a social media scheduling tool. You write a post once, pick the accounts it should go to, and Buffer publishes it at the time you set, from a queue you can reorder or a visual calendar you can drag things around on. Around that core it adds an ideas board, an AI Assistant for rewriting and repurposing posts, a community inbox for replying to comments, and analytics on how your posts performed.
It has been around a long time and has stayed deliberately simple. That's the main reason solopreneurs pick it: there's very little to learn, and the pricing is built around paying only for the accounts you actually use. If you're choosing between social schedulers, our Buffer vs Metricool vs Later comparison works out what each one really costs for a typical one-person business.
Buffer pricing (checked 29 October 2026)
Prices below are from buffer.com/pricing, in US dollars, as shown with yearly billing selected. Buffer says its pricing was last updated in November 2025. Buffer bills per channel, where a channel is one connected account, such as a single Instagram profile, LinkedIn page or X profile.
| Plan | Price per channel | Users | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0, up to 3 channels | 1 | Trying Buffer, or posting a few times a week |
| Essentials | $5/mo billed yearly ($60 per channel per year) | 1 | Solopreneurs who post regularly |
| Team | $10/mo billed yearly ($120 per channel per year) | Unlimited | People with an assistant, VA or clients who approve posts |
Buffer says yearly billing gives you a 20% discount over monthly billing; the plan cards describe it as saving 2 months. We didn't capture the monthly-billing prices, so treat any monthly figure you see elsewhere as unverified and check the toggle on Buffer's pricing page. UK customers buying as individuals pay VAT on top; business customers can enter a VAT number to have it removed through reverse charge.
Paid plans come with a 14-day free trial. If you don't add payment details at the end of it, Buffer moves you back to the Free plan, and any channels above the Free plan's limit of three are locked.
What a solo setup costs
Because you pay per channel, the maths is simple. These are our own sums from Buffer's published yearly prices, before tax:
| Your setup | Free | Essentials | Team |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 channel (say, LinkedIn) | $0 | $5/mo ($60/yr) | $10/mo ($120/yr) |
| 3 channels (LinkedIn, X, Instagram) | $0 (with Free limits) | $15/mo ($180/yr) | $30/mo ($360/yr) |
| 5 channels | Not possible | $25/mo ($300/yr) | $50/mo ($600/yr) |
One catch: if you upgrade from Free, you pay for every connected channel, including the three you had for free. Buffer also applies volume discounts above 10 channels, which matters for agencies more than for most solo businesses.
What you get on each plan
Free
The Free plan has no time limit and covers up to 3 channels. Each channel can hold 10 scheduled posts at a time; once a post goes out, the slot frees up again. You get the queue and visual calendar, unlimited drafts, 100 saved ideas, 3 tags, templates, the browser extension, link shortening, a Start Page (Buffer's link-in-bio page, which counts as one of your channels), and the AI Assistant. Analytics ("Insights") keep a 30-day history, and AI-suggested comment replies are limited to 5 a week. Threads on X, Bluesky, Threads and Mastodon are limited to one.
For someone who batches a week or two of posts at a time across three accounts, that can genuinely be enough.
Essentials
Essentials removes the limits that bite: unlimited scheduled posts per channel (subject to a fair use cap that Buffer puts at 5,000 per channel), unlimited ideas, 250 tags and unlimited threaded posts. It adds:
- Publishing extras: first comment scheduling on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, a hashtag manager, channel groups for bulk selection, and custom video covers on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
- Analytics: unlimited Insights history, a performance overview with period-over-period comparisons, filtering by tag or channel, custom UTM parameters, and exportable reports in CSV, PDF or markdown.
- Community: unlimited AI reply suggestions and saved replies.
- Notes: internal comments on your posts.
Team
Team adds unlimited users, approval workflows, custom access and permissions per channel, and branded reports with your logo. For a solopreneur, it's only worth it if someone else drafts posts for you, or you manage social accounts for clients who need to sign off.
Which networks Buffer supports
Buffer connects to LinkedIn, X, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, TikTok, YouTube (Shorts), Pinterest, Google Business Profile and Substack. Support isn't identical across them, and Buffer's own channel table is worth reading before you commit:
- Instagram business and creator accounts publish automatically. Personal Instagram profiles only get a reminder notification to post yourself.
- LinkedIn pages and personal profiles both publish automatically, but advanced analytics are for pages only.
- X free and premium profiles both publish automatically. Buffer lists basic analytics for premium profiles but not for free ones.
- Facebook groups are reminder-only.
- TikTok and YouTube Shorts publish automatically, with reminders available if you'd rather finish the post in the app.
Buffer's AI features
The AI Assistant is on every plan, including Free, and Buffer says it comes with unlimited credits. It's for refining and repurposing post copy, such as turning a newsletter paragraph into a LinkedIn post or a short X version. Every plan also gets "Takeaways", AI-written observations about what's working in your analytics, plus AI reply suggestions in the community inbox (5 a week on Free, unlimited on paid plans).
Buffer also lists integrations that let AI assistants manage your queue directly, including ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Perplexity, alongside Zapier, Make, n8n and IFTTT for automations. We haven't tested the quality of Buffer's AI writing ourselves, so treat it as a handy time-saver rather than a reason to pick the tool.
What Buffer does well for solopreneurs
The free plan is useful. Three channels with no time limit, including LinkedIn and X, is more than many competitors offer. Metricool's free plan, for example, doesn't cover LinkedIn or X.
You only pay for what you use. At $5 a channel a month on Essentials billed yearly, posting to one or two accounts costs less than almost any alternative, and you can remove a channel when you stop using it.
It's quick to learn. The queue, calendar and browser extension are simple enough that you can set up a week of posts in your first session.
Proper automation hooks. Native connections to Zapier, Make and n8n, plus an API on every plan, mean you can push new blog posts or newsletter issues into your queue automatically. Our guide to 15 AI automations every solopreneur should set up shows the kind of workflow this enables.
Replying in one place. The community inbox handles comments across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business Profile, YouTube and Mastodon, on every plan.
Where Buffer falls short
Costs climb with every account. Per-channel pricing is cheap for two accounts and less so for six. Once you post to four or more networks, a flat-priced tool like Metricool is often better value.
Analytics are lighter than a specialist's. Free keeps just 30 days of history, and some channels, such as personal LinkedIn profiles, Threads and TikTok, don't get advanced analytics at all. If reporting matters to you, Metricool goes deeper for the price.
The Free post cap shapes how you work. Ten queued posts per channel suits weekly batching but not scheduling a month ahead.
Some posts still need you. Personal Instagram profiles and Facebook groups only get reminders, not automatic publishing.
Who should use Buffer
Buffer is a strong pick if:
- You post to one to three accounts, especially LinkedIn and X, and want the cheapest reliable option.
- You want a free plan you can actually run a small business on.
- You like a simple queue more than a dashboard full of features.
- You want to feed posts in automatically from your blog, newsletter or AI tools.
Pick something else if:
- You run four or more networks and want detailed analytics. Look at Metricool.
- You're a visual creator planning an Instagram and TikTok grid. Later is built for that; see Buffer vs Metricool vs Later.
How Buffer fits into a solo stack
A common setup is a newsletter on Kit or beehiiv, with Buffer promoting each issue and blog post on LinkedIn and X, and Make moving new content into the Buffer queue so you don't copy and paste. For video, Descript can cut clips that you then schedule as Shorts or TikToks. Questions to ask before you choose Buffer
- How many accounts will you post to? Multiply by $5 a month for Essentials billed yearly.
- Do you schedule more than 10 posts per account at a time? If so, you'll need a paid plan.
- Is your Instagram a business or creator account? Personal profiles only get reminders.
- Do you need analytics beyond 30 days, or exportable reports? That means Essentials.
- Will anyone else draft or approve posts? That means Team.

Verdict
Buffer is the simplest good social scheduler for a solopreneur posting to a handful of accounts. Start on the Free plan with your real posting routine. If you keep hitting the 10-post cap or want more than 30 days of analytics, move to Essentials at $5 a channel a month billed yearly. Only consider Team if someone else is helping with your posts. Once you're on four or more networks and care about reporting, compare it with Metricool before you add more channels.
